Don't loose your important files. Use google drive

Hi all,

    This post is about how to use google drive to securely replicate your data so that you can retain it from every where and you will not lose it even if your computer crashes. Also you can synchronize your data across your PC in lab and your laptop. 

Motivation behind this: Few weeks before i saw a share in facebook saying that a girl lost her laptop from a temple and all her PHD research work (of 5 years) was in that laptop. She was about to submit report. What if such a thing happen to you ?.

   So here is a solution. Store your data online !  I saw some people are keeping document in their mail as draft, its good, i was like that. But managing and searching them is so difficult, we have a better solution. That is Google Drive . Google drive is free to use and you can store up to 5GB of data.  Here you can store Drawings, pdf, ppt, doc, text, images, videos and more.....

Yep in  gmail also I can store like that but what is the difference ?

     Here you can install google drive in your PC, then a folder named google drive will be created. Then you can copy and paste your documents there and it will upload automatically. If you made any change in the file it will be updated automatically. You can access it online and edit from your browser itself. If you have an andriod phone you can access and edit it from your phone.

Ok below I am describing a step by step procedure to set up google drive.

1. Go to url https://drive.google.com/

2.Click on install google drive for pc .
   Download and install it. Give your gmail id and password.
3. Google Drive folder.
   Now in your PC open your file browser and you can see the google drive folder there.

4. Copy and paste all your important files there. You can create folders and all.
My all files related to project are contained in this folder. So that I can access it from any where. ie from the PC in my lab and also from my laptop. It will automatically synchronize across devices,

5. If you did not add google drive in start up you need to start it for synchronizing.
You can see its icon in notification area of task bar.

6. You can share the document online download it in what ever format you want. You can send the report easily to your guide.

Virtualization for fun

• How multiple user can use same system concurrently ?

     I wan to play counter strike in multi-player mode. I have laptop and extra monitor and a keyboard & mouse. (My desktop is not working).

    Here my idea is to run a virtual machine in my laptop and configure it to use extra display, key board and mouse.

I done it in this way

• I am using VMware workstation7 for visualization.
• I created a windows xp virtual machine and installed counter strike in it.
• I run the virtual image

(I am assuming that reader knows how to create and run a virtual machine in VMware/ If you don't know please comment, I will create another page for that)

Now we want to add a network adapter to our virtual machine (for creating virtual LAN between my host OS (windows 7) and the virtual machine .

How to add network adapter to virtual machine

1. In VMware workstation click on vm menu
2. Click settings (or press Ctrl+D) 

• Now a pop up window like the one shown below will appear.

      3. Click on the add button

       4. Select network adapter and click next

       5. Select network connection mode as NAT and click finish

How to add additional keyboard and mouse to VM




        4. Follow step 1 to 3 described  above

        5. Select USB Controller and click next

        6. Check all the options and click finish.

•  Click ok button
• Wait foe some time you virtual machine screen may go blank
• Now you can see following icones below your virtual machine window.

This shows that you have two input devices (keyboard and mouse ) and a network adapter.

Click on the last input device icon (probably  it will be the additional  keyboard and mouse we connected)

Click on connect

VMware will show a warning that the device will be disconnected from host, thats what we want.

Now we connect seperate keyboard and mouse to the virtual machine and  host will not see it.

Using Display

Since connecting display to virtual machine may lead to trouble here I am simply extending the display and drag the virtual machine to extended display  .

1. Connect display
2. From your host machine take display setting and select extend display option.
3. Now drag the virtual machine to other screen 

done !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now you have two operating system running on your machine and two user can interact with them independently at the same time using their own input and output devices.

Next time when you are using virtual machine it will automatically load all the previously connected components.

How to control your childs internet access with the help of your D-Link modem

Are you so much worried that your child is accessing unwanted websites and he is accessing during study time (probably you will not bee in home at this time). Here I am giving a solution to prevent these by configuring your modem.

Filtering URL

• I am using D-link DSL-2730U Wireless N ADSL2+Router modem. 

1. Access the modem configuration interface by typing http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser's address field.
2. Give the user name and password both as 'admin',Then you will reach a web page as shown below. 

3. Click on advanced setup link on top left .
4. Then click on Url Filter link.Then a page like the one shown below will appear.

5. Click on add button then in the URL address filed give the url of website that your child should not access.
6. Leave the Port Number field blank, it will be 80 by default.
7  .Click on Apply/Save button.

Restricting  Access Time

   To prevent child accessing internet during study time.

1. Follow step 1 to 3 of above description
2. Click on Parental control
3. Click on add button then an interface shown below will be appear. 

    4. Check the check box corresponding to the day and give the blocking time .
    5.  Click apply

How to configure your system to download torrent during night time and shut down automatically in day time

    Hi I am using BSNL broad band connection. I have night unlimited usage. Since I am an early sleeper and late bloomer,  I want to schedule  my PC to wake up @ 2.00 am and start download and shut down @ 8.00 am.(automatically). So lets start.

Windows Task Scheduler

        This is a utility comes with all version of windows. You can use this tool to schedule a task and lots of customizations are available.

 go to : Start>Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Administrative Tools>Task Scheduler
you can see a window like this.

Creating a Task

•  Click Create Task on top right corner of the Task Scheduler window.
• Then a pop up window as shown below will appear.
• Give a name to the task 
• check Run whether user is logged on or not radio as sh won below.

• Now click the triggers tab and fill in  the details as shown below

• Click on actions tab and fill the details as show below

• Click on conditions tab and fill the details as shown below 

• Click on setting tab and fill the details as shown below 

• Then click OK, at this time the system will ask your user name and password, give it.Now your task is ready 

• Put the system in sleep mode before you go to sleep, then the system will wake up automatically at the desired time and start downloading torrent. 

Important

• If you shut down the system it will not wake up. (put in sleep  mode)
• Make sure that power supply and modem is switched own 
• Even though the system starts running the program on scheduled time, screen will be blank. You need to manually log in to the system. 
• If you check for uTorrent in system tray it will not be there, It is running in the background. So you need to click UTorrent.exe file to open it. After opening, it will check the file and show thee progress. 

How to make the system shut down after the free usage period .

• Go to Task Scheduler as described above . Click on create new task and give the details as shown below.

Important 

•  If you are logged in to the system, the system will show a message one minute before shutting down and you can't stop the shut down process. So don't forget to save your files.

Increaasing Torrent Download speed

Here I am describing best way to download torrent and increase security and sped of your torrent download.

Torrentz : Is the best website for searching torrents (torrent search engine ) . It will give a list of websites which are providing torrents.
  I am not satisfied with there search engine so I used to use google to search but my keyword will be like this "torrent name + torrent z".
Example: If I want to download the movie cars2 I will search it ass "cars2 torrentz" then the google will give link to torrentz page with list of webs offering the torrent.


Seeders >>>> Leeches : If you reached a torrent download page don't simply click the download button, a couple of things to be noticed before downloading.
 Every site will display the properties of torrent, download the torrent if you have a good number of seeders. Because seeders are people who are offering you the file and leechers are people who download the torrent from your computers.

•  So always prefer torrents having large number of seeds.

• Don't click on wrong download buttons. The download button marked red in above picture is some advertisement. Click on download torrent button.

• Please go through all the comments because some torrent files may contain viruses. 

Optimize uTorrent
      So many torrent clients are available now a days but I prefer uTorrent. Below I am describing how to optimize the settings of uTorrent to make the download faster. 
 Once you open the torrent file in uTorrent do the following.

• Set Download limit to high and upload limit to low as shown below : 

         Interface shown above can be obtained by clicking settings button on top right corner of uTorrent user interface.

After finishing download

•     Right click on the torrent > Click open containing folder and then move the downloaded fil to some location.
• Select the torrent and click delete button (top middle). (If you accidentally deleted the torrent don't worry your downloaded files will be there in directory )

Configuring D-link DSL-2730U Wireless N ADSL2+Router to connect BSNL broaddband

hi friends, this post will give you details about auto configuring d-link modem to connect bsnl broad band.

Insert the CD came with your modem.   

•    Then you can see the interface shown below
•    Click on the start button
•    It will take some time to start, wait patiently. For me it took 5min

Power up the Device 

•     Connect the ADSL Cable (Telephone Cable) to modem.
•     If your connection don't have any problem then the DSL LED will blink for some time and then it light as shown in figure.

  

Connect the device to computer using LAN  cable

 

  

ISP confguration

 Select the values as shown in  figure below.

Give your broadband account name and password

  The account name will be like this "id10giti phone number_scdrid" (no space) and your password is "password".

Set wireless connection

•  Give wireless SSID as you like (This name will be displayed when you switch on your wifi )
•  Select Channel : any value
•  Network Authentication: Please don't leave it none, because your neighbors may connect internet through your modem and they can even hack your system. 
• WEP key : you can use auto generated key or give your own key.
•  Note down SSID and key

Checking Connection

•  If every thing is fine the internet light will blink green
•   If you given wrong user name or password this LED will be RED

Finished 

 Now you can connect to internet.
